About

by Selena on 27/04/2010

Aanii, Boozhoo, Wacheye, Sago, Tansi, Welcome & Hello!

Selena is the Yeowoman of her small world. Her bright journey is taken these days, in the company of her partner Trevor, their fellow-adventurer and toddler Wyndham, (also know as WSL – aka: Wee Strappin’ Lad) with the most recent addition of Abigail, (Lil’ Abner) their diva infant daughter. She says a vibrant mosaic of friends and community keeps her grounded, supported and on her toes. With a focus on healthful, green grassroots living, exploring and sharing a passion for tasting all that is good in this life; onward she goes.

On an endless tour for self-knowledge from earlier years of struggle, it’s valuing her own self-worth and love found in the darkest places that have taken her from ‘nannying’ on an air force reserve at the ripe age of 15, peddling Kirby’s door-to-door, waiting tables and tending bar to restaurant management, to the academia of social work. She’s dabbled in band management and worked her way up in the NGO world. That was before the land of surprise babies; when she wore pencil skirts, sexy vintage blouses and shoes to die for. Regularly. When she was madly career driven and not much else.

More recently someone noticed her knack for entertaining the internets and suddenly became a Social Media Consultant. She thinks that is a dreadful term, and prefers Maven, for this top-notch Canadian Folk music label. (Currently on mat leave.) Then, another fabulous someone recommended her to blog on the regular for this awesome parenting publication. Some think she’s pretty alright at the writing thing. Some don’t. Who knew? At any rate – it’s whispered that she’s truly grateful for what her questionable talents are, and even more-so that other people have noticed them enough for her to be able to work from home. Well, you know – when the chaos permits.

She no longer over-extends herself volunteering as a Board Director. Her mister has asked for no more added crazy, pretty please. 2 kids under 2, with both of them being entrepreneurs should suffice at this time, instructions to her straight from the Gods. Although she can’t quite stop from dreaming about certain organizations she wants to be a part of. Like this one and this one. Governance, policy and procedure are apparently, her happy place. As is making beautiful and handsome things, specifically for babies.

Selena is deeply proud of her Anishinaabe roots and continues to immerse herself  in the traditions, ceremonies, and teachings; practicing these ways in her daily life.

Above all, she answers to mother-hood first. While it may be a rough go at times, she can’t stop gushing that she’s truly living the dream, so internets – hate, like or love her if you must. She’s just her over here. Constantly learning and doin’ her thang. Peace out says she.

From The Vault: My Most Favourite Posts

January 11, 2012

I’ve noticed quite a few, “Top Posts of 2011″ and the like from writers in the blogging community. I however have decided to choose from the much smaller collection from whence this blog began. Why? Because I started out as an irregular, complete novice. Who still does not post everyday. However, come this year a whole lot of [...]

Abigail’s Birth Vlory

September 26, 2011

Like a birth story, but in video. What? I’ve been doing the parenting thing on my own for the past week with an added 2 more kids to ours (who really have been more of a help than anything else – older kids who have been raised well rock my world!) So excuse me if I am [...]

To Be Young & Wild & Free – A Love Story

February 16, 2011

I had 6 too many drinks last night. That was a regular occurrence, and then some, ‘back in the day’. Always trying so hard to forget. And then I stopped. I came to the hardcore honest truth about myself. Smart enough to know that a path of self-destruction would not lead to anywhere I really [...]

No No Keshagesh…Reconsider This

October 8, 2010

*UPDATE 2012: This post is a biggie. Leave it open on your browser. Come back to it often. Soak it up in all of it’s entirety. Please.* In lieu of the upcoming holidays; there is much to be thankful for, much to discuss in love and unity, much to reconsider. I was in a debate recently [...]

A 9 mo. Old Wee Strappin’ Lad aka: WSL

August 21, 2010

You are the best thing, baby, ever happened to meeee. Could it be? My sweet baby boy; our Little Big Spirit Running, that you’ve entered into three quarters of a year in age? Nine months and a few days past when you found your place in this realm, here on earth. Leader from the sky; [...]

BSM: Big Strappin’ Man

April 27, 2010

C’mon. It is a bit rubbish, but YOU try coming up with worthy acronyms. I could have gone for ‘Long Term Life Partner’. He is at once a genius and absent minded. Kind and gentle. Rowdy and brave. Feisty and stubborn. Tall and strappin’. Musical and creative. Supportive and generous. Hip yet old school. Introvert/extrovert. [...]

Disclaimer

April 27, 2010

So some things I’ve noticed during my brief, tardy, foray in the blogging world. Things can get ugly. So Ima gonna try and stay away from that as much as possible, and get to the good stuff – the LOVE, beauty and inspiration which I have also seen. The sharing and community building that comes [...]

le petit rêve: The Bizz & all in a day: The Blog

April 27, 2010

With a flair for all things DIY and crafty – I have decided to take my mad skillz live, as a mompreneur. Over the years friends and family have reaped the benefits of receiving my handmade gifts for presents and I’ve been told time and time again that I should sell my wares. So, voilà. [...]
